Russia
The next stop in our Dolls Around the World tour is Russia, home
to soaring onion domes, ornate and exotic architecture, vibrant icon
paintings, and rich folk art. In the doll-making world, nothing says "Russia"
more than matryoshka — the nesting doll. Although they seem to evoke a
much more antiquated time, the dolls first appeared on the scene only about a
hundred years ago, turned from lime, birch, alder, or aspen. Since then,
artists have been adorning this folk art with political likenesses, colorful
animals, reproductions of landscapes, or characters from fairy tales.
Traditional dolls, dressed in festive regional costumes, are also abundant in
this storied country.
